Jeep Winches – WARN, Mile Marker, & Smittybilt Winch
Comments 486
It’s a beautiful, sunny day. You’re hitting the trails in your Jeep, feeling the warm sun and a cool breeze (perfect combination). Then it happens – you get stuck. It can take hours and a lot of money to have a tow truck come get you out, but if you have a winch it’s a non-issue. For the February vote, you choose which of 3 great Jeep winches will be installed on this JK: WARN, Mile Marker, or Smittybilt.
A Jeep winch is a definite investment, but it’s one of those parts that can save you enormous amounts of money in the long run. You can’t always predict what the conditions are going to be when you’re off-roading; heck, that’s part of the fun! But when something unexpected happens and you get stuck in a remote location, towing fees can be outrageous. It’s so much easier and cheaper if you have a winch so you can pull yourself out.
Choose which of these 3 great Jeep winches you think should go on the JK:
WARN PowerPlant Dual Force HP Winch & Air Compressor
The obvious benefit of this WARN winch is that it’s not just a winch – it’s an air compressor too! That means with this one item you’ll be able to winch your vehicle, fill up any flat tires, and power air tools as well. No other winch is going to offer that kind of versatility. Plus, it won’t require any extra wiring or plumbing, making it an easy install.
Specs for the WARN PowerPlant winch:
- Rated Line Pull: 9,500 lbs
- Motor: 12v
- Horsepower: 4.6
- Gear Ratio: 156:1
- 5/16 inch Wire Rope: 125 ft
- Roller Fairlead
Mile Marker HI10500 Hydraulic Winch
It may not have an air compressor, but there are a couple of ways this Mile Marker winch sets itself apart. First of all, it has the highest load capacity with 10,500 lbs. But the biggest difference is that it’s a hydraulic winch, whereas the other two are electric. This means that you’ll never have to worry about running out of power when you’re winching. The winch hooks up to the power steering pump for a constant supply of energy. As long as the engine keeps running, so will the winch. And it even works in mud and water!
Specs for the Mile Marker HI10500 winch:
- Rated Line Pull: 10,500 lbs
- Voltage: 12v
- Gear Ratio: 6:1
- Wire Cable: 100 ft
- Roller Fairlead
Smittybilt XRC-10 Comp Series Winch
There are many people who like to keep things simple; if it’s too fancy, it’s not for them. This Smittybilt winch would fall under that category. There aren’t many bells and whistles. What you get is a straightforward, powerful winch that you will be able to rely on again and again. The muscle of this Smittybilt winch offers the heavy-duty toughness you need in a winching situation.
Specs for the Smittybilt XRC10 Winch:
- Rated Line Pull: 10,000 lbs
- Motor: 12v
- Horsepower: 5.5
- Gear Ratio: 218:1
- Synthetic Rope: 94 ft
- Aluminum Fairlead
As an extra feature, we’ll be installing the Bestop HighRock 4×4 slider step. These great Jeep parts act like a nerf bar when they’re in the up position. Then you can just slide it down and it’s a convenient step pad.
About Warn Industries: They started by producing locking hubs for WWII, but Warn Industries really made their name when they developed the first recreational winch in 1959.
About Mile Marker: Mile Marker is known as an innovator of high quality hydraulic winches. Today, Mile Marker is still the only approved winch for the US Military’s HMMWV (Humvee).
About Smittybilt: Basil Smith, the founder of Smittybilt, was one of the original four wheel drive enthusiasts. Today, his passion for creating 4wd equipment is evident in over 2,000 products.

I vote for the warn. I love warn products, the air compressor is a great thing to have. The warn has 25 more feet of length than the others. This jeep is gonna be sweet! Jeeps are my dream vehicles, my first car was a cj7 I loved that thing more than anything! Don’t really expect to win though! Ha ha I’ve never won anything.

I am very happy with my Warn Powerplant as it also is my compressor. I currently use it on my Samurai and have had “0″ issues. I do not have power steering so the other brand was not a choice. I need the exercise anyway.

I don’t know much about the other winches, but I know that the Warn is used on the HMMWV (HummVee). If we send it into battle, it’s good enough for me.

well in my opinion any vehicle, and especially The Jeep (or any model)my favoriate being the JK; would complete a the real world 4×4 offroad machine! All three Winch’s are of the most elite and have the needed feature’s in the event of an emergency “STUCK”! However the added feature of the air-compresser; for resetting a bead or powering air tools ,airing up an ARB Pillow Jack,or for helping a down Hot air Balloonist reinflate or to inflate a River-Rafter’s Raft; more realistic your Tire’s but seriously anyone needing the benifets of a quaility air supply let alone that of one of the three Worlds Greatest Winch’s! Bias or not, Logically I have to Give my nod to The WARN 9500 air combo of the three winch’s being the best bang for the buck!

Since it is early in the morning I am not too verbal yet, but, I must say Wow!! Great!! Would love to win….

Mile Marker has my vote.
I have a 12,000 lb hyd mm on my 03 Cummins. It’s a wonderful thing not having to stop winching in order for the winch and alternator to cool off, it can run non-stop as long as the engine is running. Also I love the fact that I can run it under water if needed. In the case of the single battery jeep (no battery stacking required)
Mar 1 @ 07:51amBlanche Moore says:
This would really help me to get my boat out of the lake! Being 87 years old it gets tougher to do that.
Mar 1 @ 07:53amBlanche Moore says:
I need this!!!
Mar 1 @ 08:04amJosh says:
The warn is the best way to go because it also has a compressor.

After a heavy rain, i was called to bring my wrangler to a location where two chevy trucks were bogged down in the mud up to their frames. I have a smittybilt xrc10 winch mounted. It took me bu a few minutes to pull them bout out, where they had been working hours to do. several guys there were very impressed and said that they were going to get smittybilts.

Mar 6 @ 15:13pmJim says:
Love that 4 door Jeep
Mar 10 @ 08:12amNano says:
I missed the vote, but if I had, it probably would have been on the Warn. that may be more-so because I just bought some front & rear Warn bumpers, and a Warn winch only makes sense. I’m not a very learned mechy-techy type, when it comes to automobiles, so I wouldn’t consider my opinion to have as much weight as most Jeepers, I would think. I have a question for those in the know… The Air Compressor in the Warn winch, can that be used for multi-purposes? Like tire inflation or other things that use air compression? If so that is some great versitility!
Apr 20 @ 22:02pmStephen says:
I love my Smittybilt XRC winch, it has saved mine and a bunch of others tails on the trails. The Warn with compressor sounds nice but thats a lot of stuff blocking the radiator which may cause some heating issues on heavier trails. Just better in the long run to use a seperate compressor and winch and let that radiator breath.
